A square table on a round rug is an odd choice because the corners of the table become the prominent feature of the space. The benches are great as they slide under the table out of the way. Given the configuration of the room if we use a rug the pool table can t be centered on the rug as you can see in the picture below. But the chairs get caught on the edge of the rug others have said.

It s not uncommon for people to place area rugs in between their pool table and hardwood or even concrete flooring like in the garage. The same goes for a square table on a rectangular rug. Give yourself anywhere from about eight to 24 inches on all sides.
